Do you believe in magic?

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

Signposts appear everywhere. Think back to the most life changing of times. Can you remember seeing or hearing something that made you stop dead in your tracks? Perhaps you heard a voice telling you to go one way or you saw a post which affirmed a decision you’d already made. A large poster with the words ‘Just Do it’ Nike Style exploding into your vision just as you asked for clarity on a decision? I am convinced that our inner voice is constantly at play guided by an intuitive knowing which we either choose to acknowledge or ignore. I’ve ignored it for a huge part of my life. Preferring to follow a ‘realistic’ and ‘practical' path.

March 2012 I was on a Washington DC night stop. I had awoken early as I usually did, feeling envious of those who could sleep longer than 4am. At 6am I made my way down to the gym, a small affair with just a few bits of equipment. Good I thought, no one here, no waiting for machines to become available and definitely no conversations that started with ‘Did you sleep’.

I was armed with the latest copy of The Cygnus Review a bi monthly magazine which featured esoteric books, meditative tapes, adverts for cottages in Glastonbury and all manner of things spiritual. I climbed on the exercise bike and placed the copy in front of me as I started to peddle gently at first then more vigorously latterly.

A few pages in, my eye was drawn to an article about Professor Ursula James. The article was entitled ‘Reclaiming Your Magic’. On further investigation I learnt that Ursula was the only Professor of Clinical Hypnosis in the Uk. She was a visiting teaching Fellow at Oxford, a Television Personality and an Author of multiple books. She also had a Practice where she helped people in Harley Street. But none of that was drawing me in, as impressive as it was. It was the subject of her book ‘The Source’. The interconnection of two women centuries apart whose lives had involved the same journey. 16th Century Mother Shipton, banished to a cave to live out her days alone as was the norm back then. Witches and Herbalists were hunted down, hung and burnt at the stake. Fast forward to this this day and age and the story of a healer of our time. A claim on her page which jumped out at me was ‘probably a Witch’. I was fascinated, I bought the book immediately on my return to the Uk. I then contacted her and asked if she would appear on my radio show. She promptly agreed. Several years later, on writing her new book ‘The Soul Midwife’ I called her up again and she appeared once more on my show.

When 30th July was decided on for a launch day for Crew Radio it wasn’t difficult to decide who our very first guest was to be. Not least because I had told her at Christmas time of my plans and she had been delightfully supportive. She immediately blocked the time off in her schedule and agreed to be interviewed.

Those who heard our first show on air will know that it was fraught with technical issues relating to broadband capacity and Ursula’s interview was lost in the drama of it. We tried to retrieve as much of it as we could and Ursula was gracious and not at all irritated in the way we have come to believe celebrities can be when things are less than successful. She will of course giggle when she reads that I describe her as a celebrity but to me she is a legend.

She says that once you suspend your belief in only one reality then you can believe in the possibility of magic. As I write this, many of my colleagues are saying goodbye to a job they have had for many years.. myself included. Many are understandably heartbroken. Others are at a loss to know which way to go or what to even think about in terms of new jobs and new directions.

If you can truly believe we make our own magic then anything is possible. The chains we are bound by are rarely enforced by others. Instead we live within our own headspace. Reality created by our own focus and beliefs. The biggest joy is pushing the boundaries and discovering that other realities are possible.

When you believe then magic can really happen…

I will leave you with the lyrics of a song by Cliff Edwards, although synonymous with the late great Walt Disney and his vision. Now, there's a person who knew a thing or two about creating magic in life:

When you wish upon a star

Makes no difference who you are

Anything your heart desires will come to you

If your heart is in your dream

No request is too extreme

When you wish upon a star

As dreamers do

Fate is kind

She brings to those who love

The sweet fulfilment of their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue

Fate steps in and sees you through

When you wish upon a star

Tour dreams come true

For me that’s the magic Ursula talks about and do you know who I think the ‘star’ in the lyrics is? It’s YOU!

Be brave, wish upon your own star qualities and fly high my beautiful colleagues.
